I am beyond grateful to share that Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger was named one of three finalists for the Best Baseball Nonfiction Book by The Twin Bill, a baseball literary site and podcast. This is the third year that The Twin Bill has named a best nonfiction book of the year, and the first year in which finalists were announced. I appeared on Episode 45 of the Twin Bill Baseball Book podcast hosted by Scott Bolohan which dropped June 23, 2025. I encourage you to check out The Twin Bill if you are a baseball fan.
Congratulations to Andrew Forbes for his book Field Work, which took home the top honors, and to Dale Jacobs (Makeshift Fields: Chasing Baseball Across Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales) and Will Bardenwerper (Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America) for finalist recognition. While I have yet to read Andrew's or Dale's books (they were added to my reading list!), I thoroughly enjoyed Will's book which was a heartfelt look at what happened when organized baseball pulled out of Batavia, N.Y. Interestingly, my son's first machine pitch baseball team was named the Muckdogs, the long-standing moniker of the Batavia minor league club. Will paints an intimate portrait of Batavia's citizens and the independent team that makes it difficult to not root for the team of small college baseball players hoping to get noticed by Major League personnel, or the residents who Will befriends. Thank you to Kevin at August Publications for taking a chance on my manuscript. And thank you to everyone who has purchased and read The Forgotten Dodger.
